Signs of Spring

2/1/2026

Hello!

Signs of spring are popping up everywhere now and reminding me that it’s time to begin creating more pieces to showcase flowers, sprigs and twigs. I have begun working on tulipierres which are vases with a lid containing multiple apertures or spouts for displaying flowers, principally tulips. This form of vase originated in the 17th century and traditionally was made in blue and white delftware in the Netherlands. Sections interlocked and stacked in a pagoda style to create an elegant pyramid. Modern iterations can be found in many styles and colours. Mine are simple curvaceous forms glazed in a pale semi transparent palette.

In addition to these, I have been making some small bud vases and experimenting with using strong colour on the insides and only porcelain slip for texture and red iron oxide on the outsides. I have been experimenting with the form of these vases as well, deliberately distorting them to look more like collapsed fabric than polished neat symmetrical pieces.

One ongoing project I have really been enjoying is making ceramic table centrepieces. A group of four ladies have been coming to the studio to fashion flowers out of clay which I have been attaching to curved bases ready to dress tables at an upcoming wedding reception. I am currently experimenting with glaze tests to see what works well to complement these lovely pieces. This project has inspired me to hold a class at a local community centre later in summer. Plans to be announced soon.

I am looking forward to spending a day next week at St Mary's School in Bishop's Stortford working on throwing skills with a small group of Year 12 students. Their enthusiasm is inspiring and it is an honour to be invited to contribute to their clay experience.

'til next time,

Sarah
