I have always been fascinated by the transformation of clay into pottery, either functional or abstract, beautiful or utilitarian. Visiting working potteries whilst on holiday was always a complete highlight.
After a couple of years’ pottery evening classes during my 20s I really got started in earnest in 2017 when my friend Jo asked me if I would like to go on a day long throwing course with her. This was such a positive experience that I joined the Southern Ceramic Group and soon purchased a secondhand kick wheel and as much clay as I could fit in the car.
I am indebted to Jo for this experience and also to master potter Margaret Gardiner of Great Hallingbury for her help and support in my pottery journey. With her guidance, I have attended as many courses as I could and last summer completed the two year foundation diploma in Ceramics at West Dean College under the excellent tutelage of Tanya Gomez.
Most of my current work is functional and created in stoneware with graduated and blended glazes or alternatively painted loosely with brightly coloured slips, underglazes and oxides. I am constantly striving to perfect the forms I make and to try new techniques and experiments.
I have work for sale at Blake House Craft Centre near Braintree and I’m often at local markets and craft fairs. I am a member of Anglian Potters.
